Help Us Feed Students & Staff

We’ve been busy at the Market over the past two weeks and would like to share some of what we have been doing.

From the onset of the pandemic, we have been mindful of how Covid-19 is impacting those less fortunate than us. And, being in the food business, we were especially concerned about families that were going hungry. We’ve been searching for a way to help and were finally able to connect with two great organizations.

Potomac Market Food ProgramWith the help of our friend and Market customer, Denise Schleckser, we connected with  Kind Works, who connected us with the 480 Club, and we have implemented a lunch program for our local kids. If you are not familiar with these organizations, please check them out. They do great work to help our youth and families in our local communities.

It may come as a shock to those who live in Potomac and Bethesda, but over 50 percent of Montgomery County school students qualify for free school breakfasts, lunches and snacks. For about a month now we have been donating 136 high quality lunches weekly for students and staff at two ‘study pods’. A study pod is a group of 16 underprivileged teenage students whose parents cannot care for them at home during the week.

They assemble daily at two community centers in Gaithersburg and attend classes virtually. As schools are closed, the federally funded school breakfast and lunch programs are no longer available. For many of these kids, the school lunch was their most nutritious meal of the day, and so, we decided that this was a great way to give back to our community and to support our kids. Going to bed hungry creates many issues for growing children – mental, emotional and physical.  Feeding their body and brain, not only enhances learning in the moment, it also builds the body and brain for the future.

Potomac Market Food ProgramInterestingly enough, when we visited the pods this week, we were told that while there is normally some attrition among the students, since the onset of our meals program, not a single student has dropped out!

We would like to continue this program, and hopefully, expand it through the end of the school year, so we are asking for your help. If you would like to help, please donate below.

Thank you,
Jim & Yasmin
